An outstanding early Cross Block quit pattern quilt that won’t disappoint.
The center block of turkey red, the only red block has initials of D A J in tiny cross stitch lettering, another characteristic of early quilts.
Also the maker put in pencil the initials in the very small corner block of D A J.
The condition of this circa 1840’s original quilt is excellent. No wear is noted, nor are there any repairs or restoration.
Because this quilt is in the condition it is, I feel that the families that owned this quilt kept it for their “good” special quilts.
This quilt is from New York.
To have a quilt from that time period with fantastic early fabrics is a treasure and one for any collector or one that loves early fabrics , or one to enjoy its history of life.
I’m sharing the book by Eileen Jahnke Trestain, Dating Fabrics A Color Guide, as the educational book shows images of fabrics of different time periods and this shows so many similar to that 1830-1860 time period.
The turkey red block with the initials has a print that is almost identical to a fabric in the book from the time probably circa 1850’s.
The dimensions are 89x97, a size that is often found in earlier quilts like this. Shown on a queen bed and it has a nice drop on the sides.
