Outstanding museum quality early New York Album quilt that is dated and signed.
The details on the quilt and the condition of this quilt is fabulous.
The date of 1853 along with the signatures in not only the blocks but some in the border.
Names with towns include Elizabeth Mickle , Canaan.
E Mickle, Chatham Columbia. NY
Elizabeth Mickle, Chatham Oct 27th 1853
We know quilts of caliber don’t come along every day and this one is a step apart as not only does it have all the early original signatures, but the condition is fantastically excellent and that is so exciting for a quilt of this age.
The signatures are easy to read, making it a researchers dream.
The fabrics in the blocks are a collectors delight. So many and so many different early fabrics.
Even the hand quilting is wonderful and I noted how some of the quilting designs were different in some of the edge blocks, like objects or figures.
Some of the signatures include, CE Mickle, Jane Ann Wilcox, Rachel Babcock, initials E…M…, Martha Mickle, initials W.H.M., Mrs Esther Jones, initials C.E.E. & E.L.M. , W Harrison Mickle, Catherine Simmons, Mary Ann Doty, Daniel J Falls, Betsy Ann Jones, Josephine, Mary J Mickle, Kate Northrop, Cynthia J Mickle, Hannah Doty, Nelly Ann Simmons and more.
From some research that was discovered Daniel J Falls was found in an 1860 census living in Kinderhook which is near, about 8 Miles or so from Chatham, New York and all south of Albany.
The dimensions of the quilt is 81x94 inches.
I have included lots of images,, so many showing the great details on this quilt.
Let this be a quilt that is part of your collection as one that has history on cloth that will endure another 170 some years !!
