This unique outstanding design, one not frequently seen in the 2 color format, is a beauty. This is a New York quilt.
The graphic colors of red and cheddar on a natural ground make this design a winner and quite a bold design.
My understanding that this is a traditional 8 pointed Star combined with a distinct piece that resembles a trailing comet.
This pattern is now attributed and called “The Missouri State Quilt Block”,,, the quilt pattern honoring Mark Twain. As a famous quote” I came in with Halley’s Comet .. it will be the greatest disappointment of my life if I don’t go out with it”
They attribute the pattern to the relationship to Halley’s Comet.
I gave this beauty its first bath and then it was air dried. The overall condition is excellent with only minor residual spots that are not significant in any way. No wear noted.
This quilt is all had quilted and love the clamshell quilting in the ground areas and the tiny hand quilting done in diamonds in the red 4 point star. The smaller stars are quilted by the piece.
A circa 1880’s quilt that has a sleeve on the back edge. So it appears this quilt was displayed by a previous owner/collector.
The dimensions 77x79 inches.
