This is one I’ve been saving, kept in my collection for some time and now to share its beauty and history of a great quilt and one that collectors, museums and anyone that loves early quilts will enjoy.
An early quality quilt that is in incredible condition given it’s a circa 1850’s or possibly earlier quilt. A chintz Octagons with an outstanding border print. The print in the blocks has a delightful paisley design. The light chocolate border print has various designs and florals.
It shows all the qualities of being kept as their “good“ quilt as it doesn’t appear to have been really used and is unwashed. To imagine almost 200 years ago this quilt was made at a time of no electricity and the conveniences of today. All I could find to note was a minor couple splits on the border edge.
The hand quilting is nicely done with small quilting stitches.
The border exhibits double rod quilting, 2 rows of quilting close together. A quilting design of a feathered wreath is seen in-between the blocks.
The narrow binding is a testament to the early style of quits as the size is 92x101 inches.
