This is one for the books.. an early Schoolhouse Antique quilt with the best of fabrics, the best of condition ..and add to that it is old machine quilted. I imagine quilted on an early foot powered treadle machine.
The condition of this favorite American classics is excellent. The fabrics are a wonderful collection of browns, yellow, reds, red checks, green, gray and more. Even the backing is a great early print.
Oh, and see if you notice how some of the houses that are pieced differently. I didn’t notice that right off.
We love this also that it’s a crib size or in today’s world one fantastic quilt shown as wall art. Consider it an example of folk art.
This charming antique quilt can even be the center piece on top of a bed.
A true and fine example of early machine sewing. I focus on that because it’s not always common to get great examples of quilts from this circa 1880’s time period that were early machine quilted.
Possibly the maker loved using “her” machine.
We hear comments that maybe the maker wanted to “show off” that they had one of these sewing machines though sewing machines were available in the 1850’s.
The dimensions are 46x48 inches.
So teachers, collectors, antiques lovers, any one that appreciates old quilts. May this speak to you as it does me, it’s wonderful.
