This early indigo, a small scale Triple Irish Chain patchwork of one inch blocks is one to enjoy.
The outstanding hand quilting with the quilting designs reminds one this was a quilt made long ago with detailed handwork. Close crosshatch designs and the feathered wreaths add to the quality of handwork.
The hand quilting is done at 11 stitches per inch.
Because of this being an early indigo fabric which was made at a time before the synthetic indigos were developed, when wet washed for a first time it released the excessive indigo as the fabric may have been over-dyed at the time of making. It may have been a fabric that was over saturated with indigo and was an unstable indigo. With that being said, it now has a tint of all over blue that actually looks fine in my opinion and has a unique look on this early beauty.
The blue tint is a feature that is really different. I did give it several washes and rinses and then it was dried outside on the grass.
If the blue tint will bother you I understand, and the reason for mentioning it in detail so it would be clear. I did lay a sheet of white printing paper on it to compare the bright white and tinted white .
This quilt is so early and deserves to be enjoyed as its fabric is a testament of the time.
This cotton quilt is in overall excellent sound condition with no wear.
