An incredible early appliqué and pieced Pineapple quilt. Detailed piece work and nice appliqué. I mention the appliqué as some of it is early machine appliqué and some is appliqué by hand .
A circa 1870’s quilt
A beautiful shade of butterscotch prints and the green on a solid ground.
The hand quilting design is another great feature of this one as the maker did the circles, a not so common quilting pattern. I was asked if this is regional, and I don't know. I was told this quilt came out of Massachusetts.
This is one of those quilts you wonder why the maker did both styles of appliqué, the machine and the hand work. I take it as one of the reasons we love old quilts, as it was the makers choice to do as desired. Maybe the maker had a new treadle machine and wanted to show off the fine appliqué the machine could do but also the hand appliqué is great and showing off ones skill.
The Pineapple was a symbol of “Welcome and hospitality” long ago.
This fine quality antique quilt looks to have never been washed and really unused.
Another detail of this beauty is the maker added blocks to the corners of tiny small triangles, like a flock of geese. Love the whimsical appliqué on the border too that adds to the details.
The dimensions are 78x79 inches. The quilt is shown on a queen bed.
