Early Capps Indian Trade Blanket 'Osage' Pattern- Sold
(Item: B-529)
This original wool Capps Indian trade blanket is in fantastic, near mint condition. It is known as a striped "Osage"
pattern shown in a 1913 catalog. A similar blanket is shown in the book Language of the Robe by Bob Kapoun on page 85.
It was well taken care of and has the first Capps postage stamp label, as shown. This is a simply stripes pattern of
the trade blanket patterns. If it weren't for just 5 or so small spots on the red felt binding(moth nibbles?), I could
call this blanket very mint,, especially for a wool blanket now about 100 year old! This blanket has the simple
elegance of fine mission furniture. As Barry Friedman mentions in his book Chasing Rainbows on page 74, "the Capps
blankets maintained their simple beauty from their beginning in 1892 to the end in 1917". There is some good reading
about the Capps blanket line in this this chapter of Barry's book. What a wonderful collectors blanket that displays
well and has the condition to match. A special blanket indeed.
