Great Seal Of the United States Eagle Quilt Sold 10/07
(Item: Q-456)
The condition of this vintage Eagle applique quilt is excellent. Size 87x106. This pattern is made like the Great Seal
of the United States. The bald eagle is our national bird, which represents freedom. Unused and only had one bath, this
is a fine collectors quilt. One light spot, shown. Lots of fine hand quilting at 9 spi and the applique stitch is fine
as well. The gold binding is applied separately and hand whipped on. The medallion center is surrounded by 13 hand
appliqued 5 point stars. Fabrics for the ground are cotton and I believe taffeta for the applique. The eagle is holding
in the beak a scroll which says E PLURIBUS UNUM which means "out of many". The one claw is holding an olive branch and
the other claw is holding a bundle of 13 arrows. The body consists of a shield of 13 red and white stripes. The
red and white stripes represent the first 13 colonies, which 13 was used in many ways in this quilt. This quilt has
some provenance, as I was told it came from Slippery Road , Pa. Made by a Grandmother for her 3 year old grandson in
1940 or 1942. A wonderful quilt to add to a patriotic collection or for that special room.
